Prince George's County

Under the Governor’s plan, Prince George’s County must pay $34.1 million in 2013, an amount that escalates to $51 million in 2017.

In 2013, Prince George’s County will have to pay the state as much as it spends on health and environmental resources.  By 2017, that total will also include public works, family services, housing and community development.

The county’s 2013 payment would equal the salaries of:

507 teachers, or
294 principals, or
513 police officers, or
518 career fire fighters, or
635 correctional officers

The payment would equal 26% of the county’s rainy day fund.

Prince George’s County has a charter limit on property taxes and is at the state maximum income tax rate (3.2%).  With few tax options, the county may have to cut public services to meet its pension payment.

ENDORSEMENTS

"We, the undersigned organizations, are opposed to shifting costs for state pensions to county governments. The proposal that has been introduced in the Governor's budget would cost county governments $1.6 billion over the next five years alone. It would force counties to cut local services that residents depend on, from education to parks to arts and culture to libraries to human services to transportation. We call on the General Assembly to protect our community by opposing the shift."
